Intel stock fell more than 2% in premarket trading on Monday after the company’s shares posted a strong recent rally. Investors moved to take profits as caution increased over elevated valuation expectations and the company’s higher planned capital spending.
Meanwhile, Nasdaq futures rose 0.19%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.54%.
AI Demand Drives Intel’s Recovery
The recent rally in Intel stock has been supported by a significant improvement in the company’s results. Intel reported its fastest revenue growth in 15 years, with second-quarter revenue rising 25% year over year to $16.1 billion.
The recovery was primarily driven by growing demand for artificial intelligence-related data centers.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said AI is generating unprecedented demand for computing power. The executive also said the company is well positioned to benefit from sustainable growth.
Intel Raises Capital Spending Plans
Intel also raised its 2026 capital spending forecast from $18 billion to $20 billion.
Revenue from its data center and artificial intelligence operations surged 59% to $6.3 billion. Meanwhile, revenue from its foundry division increased 31% to $5.8 billion.
Tan also reiterated that Intel remains fully committed to large-scale production of its 14A manufacturing process in 2028.
Technical Analysis of Intel Stock
Despite the recent correction, Intel stock remains in a long-term uptrend.
Over the past 12 months, the stock has gained 362.56% and is currently trading 31.3% above its 200-day simple moving average, which stands at $67.04.
However, short-term indicators show weakening momentum.
Intel is trading 12.4% below its 20-day simple moving average of $100.50 and 22% below its 50-day simple moving average of $112.81. These figures indicate continued selling pressure in the short term.
Moving Averages Show Mixed Signals
The 20-day simple moving average has crossed below the 50-day moving average. This configuration represents a bearish signal and points to weaker short-term momentum.
However, the long-term “golden cross” remains intact. The 50-day moving average is still above the 200-day moving average, suggesting that the broader bullish trend has not been broken.
MACD Momentum Weakens
The moving average convergence divergence indicator, known as MACD, also remains below its signal line.
This configuration suggests that bullish momentum in Intel stock is fading, although the long-term positive trend remains intact.
What Happens Next for Intel Stock?
The recent decline mainly reflects profit-taking after the stock’s strong rally. At the same time, investors continue to assess whether artificial intelligence-related growth can justify the company’s elevated expectations.
Intel’s strong results, growth in its data center and AI businesses, and increased capital spending plans are important factors supporting its recovery.
However, the deterioration in several technical indicators shows that Intel stock is facing greater selling pressure in the short term.
The stock’s performance will therefore depend on Intel’s ability to maintain the momentum generated by artificial intelligence demand while executing its investment and manufacturing plans.
